Paint Correction Audi Q5
Paint Correction is being carried out on this black Audi Q5.
This will give you the opportunity to see how paint correction will totally transform the paintwork of your car.
I am uploading a few before and after videos for you to watch so you can see the difference for yourselves, so please feel free to watch them as the results are incredible.
This black Audi Q5 was booked in by a client as he wanted to sell the car. The paintwork was in a terrible state, with swirl marks covering every panel. Surface scratches were everywhere and there were quite a few scrapes on the car too. There were also large marks down the near side of the car due to driving too close to the hedgerows down a narrow country lane.
The worst part for me to look at was the TFR burn marks in the paint. TFR is a product that cheap car washes use to wash your car with and it does more damage than good. It should never go on paintwork but because it’s cheap and removes filth quickly, they insist on using it on everyone’s car. Cheap car washes destroy cars!!!
Due to the TFR, the paintwork had lost all of its gloss, gone dull and was very patchy, so the intention of the detail was to cut through all of these defects and leave a rich defect free deep gloss which would take years off the car and make anyone looking for a new Q5, want to own this one.
What paint correction products we used
Car Paint Correction requires multiple stages of machine polishing, especially with notoriously hard Audi paint lacquer. It’s literally like polishing a brick!!! A rotary machine polisher combined with hard pads are required along with some seriously aggressive compounds. You can forget to use a dual-action polisher when it comes to Audi, you will literally get nowhere, so if you haven’t got a rotary machine polisher, I wouldn’t even attempt it.
My choice of pads were Lake Country wool and microfibre pads, along with Gyeon purple Rotary compounding pads, I also use Chemical Guys hex logic yellow pads for a bit more delicacy when correcting as they aren’t so harsh.
My secret weapon as far as compounds go, when it comes to paint correcting rock-hard German lacquers is Scholl Concepts Shock2Cut. Seriously, I wouldn’t leave home without this compound. It is quite simply the best product out there when it comes to harsh correction and will save you hours and hours of hard graft.
Anyway, let’s take a look at the bonnet of this car beneath the halogen lights before any paint correction work is carried out…!
As you can see, it’s in a terrible state, but after paint correction, it now looks like a brand new bonnet. The bonnet took about 5 hours to correct and 6 passes with the rotary to get it looking like this…………
Now we will take a look at the rear off-side door which is yet again suffering from fading, heavy swirling and some nasty surface scratches. Take a look at the video before any paint correction takes place.
The door panels took quite a bit of work to remove the defects with the lower half of the doors being significantly worse. This door took 6 passes with the rotary to permanently remove the defects but you can see the huge difference easily after it has undergone paint correction. Levelled paintwork results in a mirror-like finish and is the ultimate surface on which to install a nano-ceramic coating to ensure the maximum duration of the coating.
Performing a final polish
I won’t post every single photo and video on here as the whole car is very much the same as what you have seen already. The paint correction stage for the whole car took five full days to carry out. Once this was completed, i swapped the rotary polisher for the dual action polisher, swapped to a soft black pad and then machined the whole car with Menzerna 3500 final polish.
This removed the holograms that were put into the paintwork due to the amount of aggressive work during the correcting stages and refined the paintwork perfectly, ready for a final stage of Super Final polishing, once again with the DA and a black soft pad, but this time i swapped the 3500 for Menzernas flagship finishing product 3800 super final polish. There isn’t a polish out there to rival it in my opinion.
I finish every car i carry out a paint correction on with this product, but most detailers will usually just final polish a car after a correction, they won’t give themselves extra work like i do here at Black Country Detailing, by squeezing in the stage before with the 3500.
This is what makes all the difference and is the reason why i won first place at The Concourse D’Elegance in 2018 for my work when I had the privilege of detailing the world’s most expensive brand new car – The Rolls Royce Sweptail, costing £13 million pounds.
Applying a ceramic coating
Once both stages of final polishing were completed, the whole car was wiped down with Isopropyl Alcohol or IPA for short. This is to ensure that any residues of polish are completely removed from the paint surface to prepare it ready for the ceramic coating. The surface must be spotless before it is applied…!
Then the coating was installed. For this car, I used a new product from the people over at Formula 1’s Williams Renault. It’s called Williams Ceramic Plus, which is a professional use only 5-year 10H ceramic coating and is unavailable for public purchase. Its a very durable coating and leaves an incredibly reflective finish. It also means that this Audi won’t require polishing for the next 5 years as a result as the ceramic has safely locked this lovely rich gloss finish beneath its hard transparent layer.
